Zahara Double Zinnia

Zinnia ‘Zahara Double Bright Orange’

A plant we turn to for bright, bold splashes of color from midsummer to frost is Blue Ribbon Zinnia. As a tried and true garden standard it often gets overlooked for trendy, edgier selections but with vibrant shades and interesting forms Zinnia can transform a ho-hum garden bed into a lavish display.

We like to use Zinnia in the middle to the front of the border, depending on the cultivar—they range from 1 to 1-1/2 feet tall. To show off the pretty flowers that appear at the top we try to plant Zinnia in a solid block about five feet wide rather than a narrow row. A grouping of one color is very effective but we also like to mix colors for added drama. Zinnia is handy for filling in bare spots in a sunny garden, too.

During the long, hot days of summer we appreciate an all-Zinnia design. Our Zahara varieties especially are dependable for their tolerance to drought, heat, and disease as the temperatures climb during the height of the season. Large blooms cover these full, bushy plants all summer long.

A grouping of one color is effective but mixing colors adds drama

We’ve added a few new Zahara Doubles to our Zinnia collection. Salmon is a new shade that’s quite different than most other Zinnia offerings. It opens the color palette, whether for mixing with other Zinnias or combining with an assortment of plants—such as blue Salvia.

Bright Orange is just that—it doesn’t have the red in it that other oranges do. It’s vibrant and light without the heaviness some orange tones exhibit. There’s no autumn feeling here.

White—oh, the White—it has renewed our faith in white. We shied away from pushing white because the old blooms hung on when they were brown and really detracted from the plant.  This one blooms long and hard and does not seem to cycle as much.  As a result the white is very pure and clean. Plus this variety buries its dead so you don't have a plant covered with unsightly spent blooms.
